The Migration Data and Knowledge Project is a flagship project at India Migration Now aiming to bring together the latest knowledge, expertise, and research in the migration world for scholars, policy-makers, and students of migration. This includes visualisations of the latest, large scale data sets related to migration, IMN's own Interstate Migrant Policy Index, and a dynamic repository of migration studies and reports from across the country.
Data is one of the most significant issues in contemporary India migration research. This is particularly true for data on internal mobility. While the Census does record some information, the exercise occurs once every ten years and the release of the data takes even longer. Some states such as Kerala and Tamil Nadu conduct comprehensive independent migration surveys which it is important to eventually scale up. In the absence of nationwide data, migration scholars increasingly rely on small scale micro studies, ethnographies, and surveys conducted across the country. In an effort to bring this repository of knowledge and expertise together, IMN presents the MDAKP.
The MDAKP brings together effective visualisations of the latest large-scale survey data related to migration (Census 2011), IMN's own Interstate Migrant Policy Index, and hosts an ever-expanding repository of migration research papers, studies, and reports.
